Celebrate the season with Sweetbird Sugar-free Gingerbread syrup

This winter season, the drink of choice on coffee shop menus is the gingerbread latte. The drink has become so popular with consumers that a recent Starbucks Twitter poll revealed that the gingerbread latte was the consumers favourite winter hot drink in 2016 (up 34 per cent on the second favourite, toffee nut latte).

The familiar taste of ginger brings a touch of nostalgia for Christmas gone-by and has a comforting aroma that is the embodiment of the winter period.  It will bring fond memories to some consumers of  decorating gingerbread or building gingerbread houses at Christmas!. However, the familiar taste comes with caution on sugar content, as it was recently revealed by charity Action on Sugar that a medium gingerbread latte can contain up to 90 grams of sugar – that’s 22 ½ teaspoons of sugar.

Speaking on the sugar content in hot drinks, Lucy Jones, of the British Dietetic Association, told newspaper The Times, “Festive coffee drinks can seem a harmless choice compared to a mince pie. However, all of these drinks can contain more sugar than recommended for a woman in a whole day. Therefore, if given the option, I would recommend having your latte with a sugar-free syrup and low-fat milk – that way you can enjoy it guilt-free.”

Try these recipes for yourself;

Lemon and Ginger Hot Fruit Smoothie™

  • 2 pumps Sweetbird Sugar-free Gingerbread Syrup
  • 50ml Sweetbird Lemon Smoothie
  • Hot water

Add the syrup and smoothie into a cup. Top with hot water and serve

Gingerbread Mocha

  • 2 pumps Sweetbird Sugar-free Gingerbread Syrup
  • 1 scoop of Zuma Dark Hot Chocolate
  • Single Espresso

Combine syrup with hot chocolate powder and single espresso. Stir into a paste. Top up with freshly steamed milk and serve.

Gingerbread White Hot Chocolate

  • 2 pumps Sweetbird Sugar-free Gingerbread Syrup
  • 1 scoop of Zuma White Hot Chocolate
  • Steamed milk

Mix the hot chocolate powder with a little hot water. Add the syrup, top with steamed milk and serve.
